The cause of the incident is not yet known.

Police and paramedics raced to the school, a bilingual private school in Madrid’s Mirasierra area called Montealto School, following the incident this afternoon.

It happened at around 5.30pm today as children were leaving for the day.

The youngest of the three casualties is said to have gone into cardiac arrest after being knocked down.

Attempts to save her life at one of two emergency field hospitals set up at the scene were unsuccessful.

The area where the tragedy happened is described as being “very busy” with traffic and is on a roundabout.

A single vehicle is said to have hit all three children.

It was not immediately clear if any arrests have been made.
