The World Health Organization has expressed concerns over the worsening Covid-19 pandemic situation in Europe. On Wednesday, the UN health body said that Europe had the maximum number of cases and deaths due to the viral disease over the last week, with a double-digit percentage surge in each.

Globally, Covid cases had fallen 4% the week before, despite a 7% increase across Europe over that same period. Cases in Europe surged by 18% over the last week alone, WHO data shows.

The U.K. had 647 new daily cases per million people on a seven-day average, with the U.S. on 217, according to Our World In Data. But the U.K. reported 2.13 deaths per million compared with 4.26 in the U.S.

While cases in southeast Asia, which includes densely populated countries like India and Indonesia, fell by 8 per cent as deaths rose 13 per cent over the last week.
